The problem is fad diets promote inadequate nutrient intakes and calorie restriction. Hence, such diets should not be followed, as they are essentially ineffective, especially long-term. To avoid falling into a trap, it is important to understand that, if a diet sounds too good to be true, promises quick and unrealistic results, eliminates an entire food group, fails to mention potential risks, bases evidence of effectiveness on anecdotes, or makes erroneous claims, it is a scam. While I personally have never followed a fad diet, I have a friend who had: she quickly lost weight in the first week, but then could not endure limiting her calorie intake so much anymore, so she returned to her usual way of eating and quickly gained not only her original but also higher weight.
